Tremont Neighborhood Cleveland
Cleveland neighborhood and historic landmark. Tremont one of the oldest districts of the city, once populated by immigrants from Germany. This district is now focused on art and the restaurant trade. Located south of Ohio City and west of the Cuyahoga River. To the east of the neighborhood is the Metro Health Medical Center. Columbus Road to the West.
Culture:
This area has high places steeped in history. Among these places are many churches. Pilgrim Congregational UCC. Built in 1859. Saint John Cantius. Saint Augustine, both built in the nineteenth century. In addition this area is also home to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Theodosius.
Chelsea building: Definitely one of the oldest buildings in Cleveland. It was built in 1898 more than it was one of the few see the only residential building in the city to have an elevator.
History:
This area was once attached to the Township of Brooklyn as well as Ohio City. They were both annexed by the city of Cleveland in 1867. Tremont once owned part of the University of Cleveland. The neighborhood was called University Heights at the time. Since the early 1900s, the neighbourhood has welcomed many immigrants. Mainly from the countries of eastern Europe and in particular Ukraine. These immigrants looking for work in the metal industry settled in the area until 1960. At the time, the area had a population of more than 30,000.
However, the decline of the steel industry will have left a large part of Tremont’s population. In 2000 the neighbourhood had no more than 9,000 residents. It was in the early 2000s that the neighbourhood reacted and reinvented itself. The proximity to the city centre as well as the policy of low real estate prices seduces. On the one hand real estate investors looking for opportunities but also a population of “hipsters”. It was at this time that the area was transformed and many restaurants were set up there as well as beautiful art galleries.
Ariel Castro:
Ariel Castro’s name is also known beyond Ohio’s borders for police events. The house at 2207 Seymour Avenue is just as infamous. On May 6, 2013, police rescued Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina Dejesus. The three girls were kidnapped by Ariel Castro for 10 years, assaults and rapes punctuated these ten years of captivity. It was then that Ariel Castro was sentenced by the American judicial authorities to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole plus a sentence of a thousand years in accordance with the laws of the United States. Ariel Castro was found dead in his cell on September 3, 2013. He committed suicide a month after his conviction.
